Hirenkumar Nakawala obtained his medical degree, specialising in Indian System of Medicine, in 2009. After several years of medical experience, treating patients in hospitals, he gradually developed an interest to solve medical problems with the help of engineering techniques. In endeavor to get his goal, he obtained his masters degree in Health Informatics from University of London with a thesis on the needle insertion manipulator using Lego Mindstorms. His final thesis work was aimed at a percutaneous procedure called ‘Thoracocentesis’. He also has a master degree in Information Technology from India. His past experience involves working as a hospital doctor, systems analyst (Health information systems) in National Health Services, UK and an entrepreneur by running his own hospital. He is now enrolled as a PhD student in Bioengineering (Medical Robotics) at Neuroengineering and Medical Robotics laboratory at Politecnico di Milano. His research interests include artificial intelligence in medical robotics, clinical decision support systems, healthcare interoperability and intelligent cognitive systems.
