Sara Moccia (B.Sc. 2012, M.Sc. 2014) was born in Bari on September 1990. She graduated cum laude in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano with a thesis entitled: “Statistical segmentation techniques of liver metastases and necroses in FGD-PET for the automatic evaluation of pre- and post-thermo ablation PET/CT studies”. The thesis work was supervised by Prof. Giuseppe Baselli.
Since 2015, she is pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano, in the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (Italy), and at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, in the Advanced Robotics Department (Italy). Her supervisors are Elena De Momi, PhD (Politecnico di Milano) and Leonardo S. Mattos, PhD (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia).
Sara actively collaborates with several research groups, such as the Computer-Assisted Medical Interventions laboratory at the DKFZ (Germany), headed by Prof. Lena Maier-Hein, and the Robotics Institute at the Carnegie Mellon University (US), headed by Prof. Cameron Riviere.
Her research is mainly focused on intra-operative optical-image analysis, exploiting machine-learning and deep-learning methodologies to provide robust and reliable tissue classification.
