Sonia Massa, MSc

Biomedical Engineer

Research Areas:
Biomedical Prosthetics, Robotic Rehabilitation

Location

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Rehab Technologies Lab

Via Morego 30, 16163, Genova GE

Sonia received her BSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Università degli Studi di Cagliari in 2022 and her MSc in Bioengineering, with a specialization in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation Engineering, from the Università degli Studi di Genova in 2024. She carried out her Master’s thesis at the Rehab Technologies Lab (RTECH) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), focusing on the study of motor synergies and biomechanical models to enhance control strategies for upper-limb prostheses. Prior to this, she was involved in a research project at the Università degli Studi di Cagliari, investigating oculomotor behavior through eye-tracking technologies in virtual environments with perturbed visual feedback during upper limb motor tasks. After completing her studies, she continued her collaboration with IIT as a Research Fellow, working on control strategies for prosthetic hands. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB) of Politecnico di Milano and at the Rehab Technologies Lab (RTECH) of IIT. Her research focuses on integrating musculoskeletal modeling into prosthesis control to improve user adaptation, dexterity, and overall functional performance.
