Mattia received his Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering (BTE field) from Politecnico di Milano in April 2022, graduating with a score of 110/110. His thesis work, developed within the European Artery project under the supervision of Prof. Elena De Momi, focused on the development of a robotic actuation platform for a steerable catheter and was awarded the GNB Prize.

In April 2026, he obtained his Ph.D. cum laude from Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with Medical MicroInstruments (MMI), with a thesis titled “Toward Autonomous Visual Assistance in Robotic Microsurgery: AI-Powered Ergonomic Enhancements.”

He is currently enrolled in a postdoctoral position focused on Artificial Intelligence for medicine.

Computer Vision for Assisted Microsurgery

Mattia focuses on the development of new paradigm of Visual Active Perception to improve surgical outcomes and surgeon performance. His research involves the design of AI-powered algorithms for (1) real-time tracking, (2) microsurgical instrument segmentation, and (3) depth estimation to be embedded in optical camera systems employed during microsurgical procedures.

He collaborated with Medical MicroInstruments, contributing to the integration of advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies into robotic microsurgery.
