Chiara received her Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, BIF field, at Politecnico di Milano, in April 2022, with a score of 110/110. Her master thesis, supervised by Professor Elena De Momi, was focused on the development of a SLAM framework for occlusion recovery and mosaicking in fetoscopy. She is now pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering. The research is focused on deep learning and computer vision applications for smart endoscopic techniques in advanced colonoscopy imaging.

Smart endoscopic techniques

Chiara aims to develop smart endoscopic techniques in colonoscopy in collaboration with Humanitas Research Hospital and Leeds University. The work is divided in 2 main research areas.

Polyp identification and characterization. The aim of the algorithm is to automatically detect polyps in the colon and to characterize the lesion through a virtual biopsy.

3D colon reconstruction and smart navigation. The aim is to create a 3D model of the colon. The endoscopist could use this model to check if there are blank areas (colon areas not properly seen), and to check the real-time position of the endoscope inside the lumen. Smart navigation algorithms allow to automatize the intervention, by identifying reference colon structures or specific events during the procedure.
